Common HVAC Terms

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)

Shows how efficiently your heating and cooling system uses energy throughout the cooling season. A higher SEER rating means lower energy bills.

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2)

An updated version of SEER that provides a more accurate reflection of your system's efficiency in real-world conditions.

EER2 (Energy Efficiency Ratio 2)

Measures how efficient your air conditioner or heat pump is at a specific temperature (95°F). Higher numbers indicate better efficiency.

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)

Indicates how well your furnace converts fuel into heat over a year. A higher AFUE rating means more efficient heating.

Cooling Capacity

The total amount of cooling your system can provide to keep your home comfortable, usually measured in BTUs or tons.

Tonnage

A way to describe the size of your air conditioner. One ton equals the ability to cool 12,000 BTUs per hour.

Methods and Assumptions Used in the Calculator

Our Savings Calculator estimates potential energy savings based on standardized methods and assumptions to provide you with illustrative results. We consider energy efficiency ratings such as SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and SEER2 for cooling systems, where higher ratings indicate more efficient air conditioners. SEER2 accounts for updated testing procedures by the U.S. Department of Energy effective January 1, 2023, and we convert SEER2 ratings to SEER equivalents by multiplying by 0.95. For heating systems, we use AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) percentages to measure a furnace's efficiency in converting fuel to energy over a typical year.

In our calculations, we assume average residential usage patterns, including 580 cooling hours per year. Energy costs are based on average rates for electricity and natural gas in selected locations, with electricity costs converted from cents per kilowatt-hour to dollars per kilowatt-hour, and natural gas costs converted from dollars per MCF (thousand cubic feet) to dollars per therm by dividing by 10.37. We utilize standard conversion factors such as 1 therm equaling 100,000 BTUs and 1 MCF of natural gas approximately equal to 1,037,000 BTUs or 10.37 therms.

The calculator estimates energy consumption and costs for both cooling and heating. For cooling, it calculates total cooling output based on your AC capacity and usage hours, adjusts energy use according to SEER ratings, and computes annual costs using your local electricity rates. For heating, it determines the total fuel energy input required based on your heating load and AFUE rating, calculates the fuel needed in therms, and computes annual costs using your local natural gas rates. We assume that equipment operates at its rated efficiency, but actual performance can be affected by installation quality, maintenance, and operational factors.

Important Notes

Please be aware that the calculator provides estimates that may not reflect your actual energy usage or savings. Many variables can impact energy consumption, including but not limited to weather variations, changes in energy prices, equipment condition, and individual usage patterns. For precise calculations and to explore energy-saving options tailored to your specific situation, we recommend consulting with a qualified HVAC professional.
